Authorities have issued an update after a plane crashed on a local highway Monday morning.

According to Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 8:15 a.m., State Police became aware of a fixed-wing airplane which crashed on the median of Interstate 195 in Dartmouth. The crash resulted in a fire on the ground.

Preliminary information indicates the plane may have been attempting to land at New Bedford Regional Airport, though it does not appear that the pilot provided the airport with a flight plan or the number of souls aboard the aircraft.

Troopers assigned to the Bristol County State Police Detective Unit, Crime Scene Services Section, and Field Services responded to the scene along with New Bedford and Fall River Police, Fire, and EMS.

The crash has resulted in the death of two individuals aboard the aircraft at the time of the crash.

No information is available regarding their identities until the appropriate next-of-kin notifications have been made.

During the incident, State Police are aware of one person on the ground who sustained injuries (the severity is unknown at this point). They were transported in a passenger car to St. Luke’s Hospital.

State Police have closed Interstate 195 in both directions to secure the scene.

Federal Aviation Administration Officials will likely assume primary responsibility of the investigation to determine the circumstances of the crash.
