Massachusetts soldier killed in Kabul airport blast

A Massachusetts soldier was killed in the bombing yesterday in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Sgt. Johanny Rosario, from Lawrence, was a member of the US Marine Corps’ Female Engagement Team, according to local reports.

According to a social media post, Rosario was a graduate of Lawrence High School.

The attack killed at least 13 U.S. service members, including 11 Marines, 1 from the Army, and another from the Navy.

Just this past May, Rosario was honored by her unit.

“Sgt Rosario is the Supply Chief, a billet normally held by an SNCO, and is in charge of the day to day management of the administrative functions in the supply section including the procurement, issue, accountability, and disposal of TF 51/5 property. She’s been supporting TF 51/5 by training and assisting personnel on the proper procedures for submitting purchase requests and has been responsible for making offline purchases totaling $12,105.53. Sgt Rosario’s attention to detail and expertise allowed her to track and reconcile $393,065 worth of open supply requisitions. This allowed TF 51/5 to successfully complete and submit the Dormant Accounts Review- Quarterly (DAR-Q) to HQMC in a timely manner that allows the Marine Corps to meet the DoD’s goal of passing a full financial audit.”

Lawrence Mayor Kendrys Vasquez issued the following statement.

“We are heartbroken by the death of the service men and women due to the bombing in Kabul this week. I and the City of Lawrence are particularly saddened that one of those brave souls was a daughter of our City. I have been in touch with the family of the Lawrencian killed in action to extend mine and my family’s most sincere condolences and offer all of the aid that my administration can provide as they grieve this great loss. At this time, the family’s most immediate wish is to be given privacy and that their loved one be recognized as the hero that she was.”
