Massachusetts single mom shot multiple times while enjoying street celebration

A joyful evening celebrating with her community turned into a nightmare for Ninamarie Mendes, a single mother and beloved massage therapist.

According to this GoFundMe fundraiser and another GoFundMe fundraiser, Mendes and her two children were enjoying a Cabo Verde World Cup watch party late last month when they joined an impromptu street celebration afterward in Brockton. As they danced and celebrated, gunfire suddenly erupted. While trying to shield her children, Mendes was struck by three bullets.

While recovering from her injuries, she faces not only the physical and emotional toll the shooting caused, but also financial hardship. As the sole provider for her family, she is unable to work for several months.

Mendes has been a massage therapist at Salon Monique, and she is also the owner of her own small baking business, Ninamarie Treats.

Her coworkers and friends have described her as “an amazing person, friend, and mom who always brings joy to those around her.” They are now trying to raise funds to help.

“Nina has always given her best to everyone around her,” said one colleague. “Her kindness and dedication have brightened so many days. Now it’s our turn to give back.”

At last check, no suspects were arrested in the shooting that also led to three others being shot.
