Massachusetts ranked one of the best places to start a business
With the COVID-19 pandemic leading to more than 200,000 permanent business closures, but the country starting to recover, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2021’s Best & Worst States to Start a Business.
Not counting the pandemic, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, about a fifth of all startups typically don’t survive past year one of operation, and nearly half never make it to their fifth anniversary.
To determine the most fertile grounds for planting and growing new ventures, WalletHub compared the 50 U.S. states across 28 key indicators of startup success. The data set ranges from financing accessibility to COVID-19 cases to office-space affordability.
Massachusetts ranked 10th overall in the country backed mainly on the Bay State’s #1 ranking in educated population and the 2nd place finish in COVID-19 negative tests.
No other New England state finished in the top 12.
Other sub-rankings for Massachusetts include:
18th – Avg. Growth in Number of Small Businesses
47th – Labor Costs
23rd – Availability of Human Capital
46th – Avg. Length of Work Week (in Hours)
47th – Cost of Living
34th – Industry Variety
Texas, Georgia, and California ranked in the top 3 while Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey were in the bottom three respectively.

Massachusetts offers the best social welfare benefits in the world. We the working populace of the state are poor and hurting. Some of the most elite private universities reside within our borders. World class hospitals churning patients through cash turnstiles. Most of the institutions do not contribute to the tax coffers because they have tax exempt status, although they would argue to the death, their great contribution to those who are lucky enough to attend their lessons. Small businesses owned by small families carry a massive tax burden. We are in need of relief because our costs keep rising. Just raise your prices, right! Not always so easy to do due to “Market Factors” not all under the control of the small business. Insurance rates and tax increases are the major issue that I can see. Neither the state or the insurance giants are requesting that you pay higher prices they seem to be implemented automatically. Any autonomy that a business has left after meeting all regulatory minimumn standards is minimal. Of course regulations are a good idea, but the cost of implementing our regulatory system is vampiric. We have been regulated into accepting an excessively costly beauracracy whose growth needs are never satiated. All tax dollars that are collected have been obligated well in advance of being spent. Legacy costs is what they are. Add the legacy costs to the current costs, then plan the future costs and tell me who can keep up with this tidal wave of expenses. Global Warming the greatest emergency of our time is just another way to grow expenses on everything, while you can’t even take a breath from paying today’s cost burden. But hey who cares I’m just being negative. Why pay attention to the things that imprison my family and I. I’m lucky that all the people who represent me in my government do it as a “Public Service” and not as a lucrative career. This would be unsustainable if these people were being paid. “What a Legacy.”
