Massachusetts police department warns as scams and victims are rising; here is what you need to know

The Boston Police Department is issuing a public warning regarding a rise in text message scams affecting the region. Scammers are sending fraudulent texts that appear to be legitimate job offers, missed package delivery notifications, or banking fraud alerts. These messages are designed to deceive recipients into clicking on malicious links, which can then be used to steal personal and financial information.

Below are common examples of these scams:

Unpaid Tolls / Parking Tickets

Scammers send messages warning about fake unpaid tolls or parking tickets with links to pay.

MassDOT reports EZDriveMA will never request payment by text.

Fake Package Delivery Scams

Scammers impersonating carriers (USPS, FEDEX, DHL or Amazon) send fake delivery issue messages.

DO NOT click on links or respond to unexpected text messages.

Check recent purchases on the retailer’s site for any updates.

Bogus Job Opportunities

Scammers send unsolicited full or part-time job offers. Typically texting randomly or unprovoked and claiming to be recruiters for a real or fake company. Text messages ask for personal or financial information or to click a link.

DO NOT click on links or respond to unexpected text messages.

DO research, search online for the “company name” along with “scam,” “review” or “complaint.” If the company has no online presence, steer clear.

Wrong Number Messages

Scammers send seemingly misdirected messages hoping that victims will engage in conversation with them. Often these scams evolve into romance or cryptocurrency investment scams.

DO NOT click on links or respond to unexpected text messages.

Fake Fraud Alerts

Scammers send fake fraud alerts warning about suspicious activity on bank accounts or credit card use.

DO NOT click on links or respond to unexpected or unverified text messages.

Confirm all alerts with bank or credit card companies through independently verified phone numbers or in person.

Prevent Text Message Scams

DO NOT click on embedded links or respond to unexpected or unverified text messages.

DO NOT provide anyone with your personal or banking information.

Use spam filters and block messages from unknown senders.

Use call / text blocking apps.

How to Report Text Message Scams

Forward any suspected scam message to 7726 (SPAM). This helps wireless providers spot and block similar messages in the future.

Report scam messages on messaging apps.

Victims are encouraged to file a police report with their local area station.
