Massachusetts man sentenced to prison in Fall River Superior Court for stabbing death of 51-year-old man

A Massachusetts man has pled guilty in Fall River Superior Court after being accused in the stabbing death of a man in New Bedford.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, at approximately 11:30 p.m. on October 3rd, 2024, New Bedford Police were called to the area outside of 1304 Acushnet Avenue for a report of a male stabbing victim during an altercation.

The victim, 51-year-old Jesus Torres, was rushed to Saint Luke’s Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Angel Avelino of Lynn, Massachusetts, was charged with Murder. 

Court records show that on Tuesday, Avelino pled guilty to the lesser charge of Manslaughter and was sentenced to not less than 15 1/2 years to not more than 17 1/2 years in State Prison with credit for 603 days already served.

According to WJAR 10, Avelino had six open cases in Lynn at the time of his arrest, including assault and battery and larceny.
