Massachusetts man killed in Route 6 motorcycle crash had a love for the open road

A Massachusetts man killed in a weekend motorcycle crash is being remembered.

According to Massachusetts State Police, at just before 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Troopers from the Bourne Barracks responded to a crash involving two motorcycles on Route 6 East Bound in Sandwich.  

One of the motorcyclists was transported to a local hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.  The other motorcyclist only sustained minor injuries and was taken to the barracks for questioning. 

According to those who knew the fatal victim and a GoFundMe fundraiser, 70-year-old Thomas Matthews of Plymouth “was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and uncle whose entire world revolved around his family and his love for the open road. He spent his life creating unforgettable memories with the people he cherished most and chasing his passion for riding.”

An obituary noted that Matthews was “a skilled carpenter by trade and a commercial fisherman, Tom had a lifelong passion for the water. He loved fishing for everything from cod and striped bass to bluefin tuna and scallops. He was a proud member of the John Alden Sportsmen’s Club in Manomet, American Legion Post 40 in Plymouth, and the American Legion Riders Post 40.

“Tom was known for his gift of storytelling, his infectious laugh, and his great sense of humor. He enjoyed sharing a good drink, a fine cigar, and sushi with family and friends. Above all, Tom will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to lend a helping hand. He touched countless lives through his compassion, loyalty, and unwavering support of those he loved.”

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 619 State Road, Plymouth (Manomet). A memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m. The family invites all who are able to join them after the services for a Celebration of Life at the John Alden Sportsman’s Club, 16 Minuteman Lane, Plymouth (Manomet) at 6 pm

The crash remains under investigation.
