Massachusetts man becomes first person to win $1,000,000 during Boston Celtics game
BOSTON, MA – During halftime of the Friday Boston Celtics game vs. Miami, one lucky contestant walked away with $1 million before the second half began.
Chatchavan Buasaengthong of Williamstown won a $1 million prize (before taxes) from the Massachusetts State Lottery during halftime, making him the first person to receive $1 million during a Celtics game at TD Garden.
“I was not expecting to win the $1 million dollar prize! I called my wife to tell her I had won,” said Buasaengthong immediately after winning the $1 million prize. “I want to thank the Lottery for the Second Chance promotion and am proud that the money from the Lottery helps the state.” He said he plans to use his winnings to purchase a home and start a business. Buasaengthong was one of five previously selected contestants that were brought onto the court during halftime where they were welcomed by Brian Scalabrine, former Boston Celtics player and 2008 NBA champion.
Each of the contestants chose from over-sized Mass Lottery Celtics Banner 18 instant tickets to reveal their randomly-selected prizes, with four contestants each receiving a $10,000 cash prize and Buasaengthong receiving the grand prize of $1 million. He was presented with a check from State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, Chair of the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission.
“Congratulations to all of tonight’s winners. Getting to present a million-dollar prize at a Celtics game made this a slam-dunk night at the Garden,” said State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg. “Thank you to the Celtics for a great partnership on the Banner 18 instant ticket and for facilitating this unique experience for Lottery players.”
“Our partnership with the Massachusetts State Lottery creates exciting moments that resonate with fans beyond the game,” said Ted Dalton, Boston Celtics Chief Partnership Officer. “Celebrating a $1 million winner at TD Garden was an incredible experience for everyone in attendance.”
The five contestants were selected through five separate Second Chance Drawings that took place during the sale of the Mass Lottery’s Celtics Banner 18 instant ticket game. To become eligible, players submitted non-winning Celtics Banner 18 instant tickets through the Mass Lottery website and mobile app.
