Today in Superior Court in Salem, Thiago Oliveira, 33, of Lynn was arraigned for the murder of Carla Lourenco Da Silva, 32, of Lynn, the Office of Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker announced.

Prosecuting the case on behalf of the Commonwealth, Chief of Homicide Unit Jessica Strasnick alleged that Oliveira murdered his wife, Lourenco Da Silva, on or about January 20 in a home on Summer Street in Lynn and attempted to make it look like a suicide by hanging.

Appearing via video screen, Oliveira pled not guilty to the charge before the Hon. Kathleen McCarthy-Neyman.

Oliveira had previously been charged with misleading a police investigation on January 23. By agreement of the prosecution and defense, Oliveira will continue to be held without bail following the arraignment on the murder charge. The two charges are expected to be handled as a single case moving forward.

A GoFundMe fundraiser was created at the time to help Oliveira bring Da Silva back to Brazil.

The defendant is being represented by attorney Patrick Hakes and an English-to-Portuguese interpreter was present to assist the defendant at the arraignment.

Oliveira’s defense is slated to return to court on Wednesday, May 14 for discovery motions to be filed.

All suspects and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
