Massachusetts man accused of at least 8 package thefts after he allegedly takes bait left by police

WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Hanlon reports that the Whitman Police Department arrested and charged a resident with stealing packages following an investigation.

In early December, Whitman Police received numerous reports of package thefts that occurred in a large apartment complex on Marble Street. The thefts date back to early September.

Whitman Police detectives launched an investigation that included reviewing surveillance video. Through the investigation, detectives determined that thefts occurred on at least eight occasions and were committed by the same suspect.

On Wednesday, at approximately 5:15 a.m., a Whitman Police detective conducted surveillance at the apartment complex. As part of the investigation, the detective placed a “bait” package in the building that appeared to be a laptop box.

The detective witnessed a man, later identified as 41-year-old Colin Mackie, enter the building and steal three packages from the mail area, including the bait package.

Police made contact with Mackie while he was still inside the building and took him into custody.

Mackie was arrested and charged with Larceny From a Building and Breaking and Entering a Building During the Nighttime with Intent to Commit a Felony.

Police recovered additional evidence consistent with past thefts. Additional charges are expected at the conclusion of the investigation.

Mackie was arraigned Wednesday in Brockton District Court where he was released on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty.

A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for February.
