Massachusetts mail employee accused of being drunk, crashing mail vehicle into other vehicles, building, pedestrian causing serious injuries
A Massachusetts mail employee is accused of crashing into a person, vehicles, and a building with a mail truck.
According to police, on Tuesday, at 9:39 a.m., Westcomm Regional Dispatch began receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a crash involving a United State Postal Service mail truck and a pedestrian near the gas pumps at the Pride gas station at the center rotary in East Longmeadow. Callers reported that the driver of the mail truck left the scene of the crash heading north on Elm Street, and that the injured pedestrian was by one of the gas pumps. East Longmeadow officers arrived on scene and began administering immediate first aid treatment to the injured person, who had serious injuries. Multiple eyewitnesses to the crash spoke with officers about what they saw and said the operator of the mail truck hit the person near the gas pump, as well as multiple other vehicles, and narrowly missed striking the witnesses and employees there as they were fleeing the scene.
A short time later the Peoples Bank at 201 North Main Street in East Longmeadow reported that a mail truck had just crashed into their building. Officers responded to the Peoples Bank and located the driver of the mail truck, confirmed to be a postal service employee. After further investigation at that scene, the operator of that mail truck was determined to be the same one that had struck the pedestrian at the Pride station. Robert O’Sullivan, age 54, of Westfield, was placed under arrest by East Longmeadow officers. He is being charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol while Causing Serious Bodily Injury, and other related offenses.
East Longmeadow Police Detectives, along with the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office, are continuing the investigation at this time. O’Sullivan is expected to be arraigned in Palmer District Court later today.
The Longmeadow Fire Department ambulance transported the injured pedestrian to Baystate Medical Center. At last report that person is in serious, but stable condition at this time.
The East Longmeadow Police would like to thank all of the people who witnessed this event for their assistance in quickly identifying and apprehending the suspect. We would also like to thank the Massachusetts State Police, Longmeadow Fire Department, and our dispatchers at the Westcomm Regional Dispatch for their assistance.
