A Massachusetts mail carrier and a good Samaritan rushed to save mail and packages while a postal vehicle was engulfed in flames.

On Friday morning at approximately 11:45 a.m., Dudley firefighters responded to a reported vehicle fire located at 278 Dresser Hill Road.

According to DFD, upon arrival of Dudley Police, the report was updated to a fully involved vehicle fire, which turned out to be a postal delivery truck. The vehicle was not near any structures. Additional information was relayed that the driver of the Postal truck and a bystander were in the process of off-loading the mail that they could safely access.

Upon arrival of the fire department, firefighters found heavy fire in the engine and passenger compartments of the marked Postal vehicle. An extinguisher had been utilized prior to the fire department’s arrival with little effect. A hose line was stretched, and the fire was quickly brought under control.

The driver of the vehicle was checked out by paramedics from the Southbridge FD, who responded to a call for medical mutual aid. The driver was uninjured and refused treatment and transport to a medical facility.

Once the fire was extinguished, the Dudley Fire Department assisted the US Postal Service (Webster Office), by loading up all of the packages and parcels that were rescued into the Department Service Truck. They were then transported back to the Webster Post Office.

No other injuries were reported, and the vehicle appeared to be a total loss.
