Massachusetts grandmother dies after trying to rescue grandchild from drowning

ACTON – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Acton Chief of Police Doug Sturniolo and Acton Fire Chief Anita Arnum have confirmed that on Friday at just after 1:30 p.m. Acton Police received a 911 call for a possible drowning at Nara Park. 

Acton Police and Fire Departments responded in addition to first responders from Westford and area EMS. 

The preliminary information suggests that a 75-year-old Acton woman and her three grandchildren were visiting Nara Park. The individuals were not dressed in bathing suits, and it appears they were not there to swim.

At one point the youngest child, who is almost 2-years-old went into the water as did his Grandmother.

The other children called for help and lifeguards; camp counselors and bystanders immediately responded to the area. Bystanders were able to remove them from the water and lifeguards were able to begin life-saving efforts and CPR.

The child was transported by medical flight to Massachusetts General Hospital where he later died. The children’s grandmother was transported to the hospital and has since passed away.

The grandmother reportedly went into the water in an attempt to rescue the 1-year-old.

The identities of the deceased are not being released by authorities due to foul play not being suspected.
