Massachusetts Environmental Police warning as black bears are waking up

Published

on

Massachusetts Environmental Police are issuing a warning to residents of the Bay State.

As spring approaches, Massachusetts black bears are emerging from hibernation and will immediately begin searching for high‑calorie foods. Unfortunately, that often leads them straight to backyards where chickens, small livestock, bird feeders, open grain bins, feed sheds, and pet food left outdoors all become tempting treats.

Now is the perfect time to act on these simple ways to reduce bear conflicts and help keep both wildlife and our own animals safe:

✔ Remove bird feeders

Bears key in on easy calories. Taking feeders down in early spring is one of the most effective ways to prevent visits.

✔ Secure all animal feed

Store chicken feed, grain, and pet food in bear‑resistant containers or inside sturdy buildings.

✔ Inspect and repair fencing

Winter can damage poultry fencing, livestock enclosures and electric fence lines

Ensure all parts are intact and that electric fencing is functioning properly before bears begin roaming widely.

✔ Protect your animals

Consider locking chickens and small livestock in secure nighttime enclosures and using electric fencing around coops or pens.
