Massachusetts attorney sentenced to prison for smuggling drugs into House of Correction
A Bridgewater woman was convicted and sentenced to jail time for smuggling Soboxone strips into Plymouth County House of Correction, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.
On Friday, after a five-day trial, a jury deliberated approximately three hours before finding Elana Gordon, 45, of Bridgewater, guilty of one count each of Distribution of a Class B Substance, Suboxone, and Delivering Drugs to a Prison. Plymouth Superior Court Judge Thomas MacGuire sentenced Gordon to serve six months in the House of Correction. The Commonwealth had recommended Gordon be sentenced to serve three to five years in jail.
In spring 2018, Massachusetts State Police Detectives and Inner Perimeter Security investigators at the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department conducted a several months long investigation into the smuggling of contraband substances at the Plymouth County House of Correction. Through their investigation, Gordon, who was working as an attorney, and Bello, who has a relative housed at the Plymouth County House of Correction were identified as conspiring together to smuggle drugs into the jail.
On May 4, 2018, Gordon, utilized her attorney privileges to gain entrance to the jail and meet with an inmate who was not her client. Gordon brought 61 Suboxone strips in two manila envelopes and passed them to an inmate. The inmate returned to his cell with the envelopes before they were seized by investigators.
Assistant District Attorney Jessica Elumba prosecuted the case, which was investigated by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and Inner Perimeter Security investigators at the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department.
