Man shot and killed at Massachusetts shopping plaza; suspect dies by suicide after chase on I-495
Two men are dead after an incident that spanned multiple Massachusetts communities
According to the Worcester County District Attorney, shortly after 3:30 p.m., on Tuesday, the Berlin Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the Shops at Highland Commons. Officers and emergency personnel arrived to find an injured party, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders, including Berlin Police Department, Hudson Police Department, Berlin Fire Department and EMS, Bolton Fire Department, and Boylston Fire Department rendered aid, but the victim was declared deceased at the scene.
After the shooting, a witness from the scene followed the alleged suspect onto I-495 N, and subsequently called Massachusetts State Police, who were then able to locate and successfully stop the suspect’s vehicle at mile marker 91 in Lowell, near the Lowell connector. The Masschusetts State Police Crisis Negotiations Team, State Police Department of Field Services, and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex DA’s Office responded to the scene.
Based on preliminary investigations, it appears the suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was subsequently pronounced deceased.
The DA stated that there is no threat to the public at this time.
The investigation is in its early stages and will continue ongoing in the coming days by the Berlin Police Department, Mass. State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Mass. State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services, State Police Crash Reconstruction Section, State Police Firearms Identification Section, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
