Man on probation, suspected child predator, arrested after striking officer with vehicle in Rhode Island
According to Rhode Island State Police, on Friday, members of the Rhode Island State Police, North Kingstown Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Rhode Island Office of Attorney General Special Victims Unit, and the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service collaborated in an undercover operation to arrest a suspected child predator.
“I want to commend our Troopers and our partners in law enforcement for their work last night,” said Colonel Darnell S. Weaver, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety. “Their efforts led to the arrest of a suspected child predator with an extensive criminal history. Our thoughts are with the injured North Kingstown officer and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
During the investigation, 30-year-old Alec Perry, 30 of Pawtucket, allegedly engaged in an extended series of text messages soliciting sex from an undercover police officer who he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.
On Friday, Perry believed he would be meeting a thirteen-year-old girl for a sexual encounter at a Park and Ride in North Kingstown. While police attempted to place Perry in custody, he accelerated his vehicle, striking a North Kingstown police officer. The officer remains in the hospital in stable condition.
During this incident, several officers discharged their firearms. Perry attempted to escape custody and led the officers on a short vehicle pursuit before crashing his vehicle. After a brief foot pursuit, he was taken into custody.
Perry was charged with the following:
- Indecent Solicitation of a Child
- Electronically Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors
- Felony Assault
- Driving without the Consent of the Owner
- Eluding Law Enforcement – 2nd Offense
- Assault of a Police Officer
- Resisting Arrest
- Obstruction of a Police Officer
- Duty to Stop in an Accident resulting in Property Damage
- Driving with a Suspended License – 4th + Offense
Perry is also on probation for previous charges of First-Degree Robbery, Felony Assault, and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle. Perry was transported to the Rhode Island State Police Wickford Barracks, processed, and arraigned by a Justice of the Peace. He was then transported to the Adult Correctional Institution, where he will be held as a Probation Violator in addition to his multiple charges.
The Rhode Island State Police continues to investigate this officer-involved shooting in accordance with the Rhode Island Attorney General’s protocol for a review and joint investigation by members of the Attorney General’s Office, the Rhode Island State Police, and the North Kingstown Police Department.
