SALEM, Mass. – 27-year-old Franklin M. Laras of Lawrence was arraigned Friday in Superior Court in Salem for the murder of Edward Javier-Perez, 29. Authorities allege that Laras shot Javier-Perez inside the Energy Lounge nightclub in Lawrence on December 24, 2023. Laras was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Mexico City, Mexico last month. He was then extradited to the United States and ultimately transported back to Essex County. Authorities believe Laras fled shortly after the murder.

In court on Friday, Laras pled not guilty and was ordered held without bail.

In addition to the U.S. Marshals Service, Laras’ return to Essex County to face the murder charge nearly nine months after Javier-Perez’s death also involved collaboration with the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston, MSP detectives assigned to the Office of Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker, the Lawrence Police Department, and law enforcement officials in Mexico.

“Today, we offer our sincere gratitude for the tenacity of all those whose efforts aligned to apprehend this defendant,” said Tucker. “The return of Mr. Laras to the Commonwealth demonstrates our commitment to justice and to the family of Edward Javier-Perez.”

Assistant District Attorney Lindsay Nasson is prosecuting the case on behalf of the Commonwealth. Laras is represented by attorney Michael Phelan. Laras is scheduled to return to Superior Court for a hearing on Wednesday, November 13.
