TAUNTON — Chief Edward Walsh reports that the Taunton Police Department arrested a man Wednesday morning who shot at officers while barricaded inside an apartment bathroom.

At approximately 9:00 a.m., officers responded to an address on Hodges Avenue for a well-being check.

Upon arriving and entering the house, the suspect, who was barricaded inside an apartment bathroom, shot at officers, and at least one officer returned fire. The suspect was not hit, nor were any officers.

Additional backup units were dispatched to the scene, and assistance was provided with evacuating the home and surrounding area.

Officers on the scene quickly established communication with the suspect, and after approximately an hour, the suspect was successfully convinced to surrender peacefully without further incident.

The suspect was arrested and transported to the Taunton Police Station for booking.

Police believe that this was an isolated incident and not a random act of violence and stated that there is no ongoing threat to the community’s safety.

The scene is being processed by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Taunton Police thanked its partners, including Massachusetts State Police, Taunton Fire Department, Taunton Emergency Management, and Brewster Ambulance, who responded to the scene and assisted.

No further information was released.
