Local summer events start canceling due to COVID-19
A local fireworks display and parade are among the first summer events canceling due to COVID-19.
The Freetown Parade & Fireworks Committee announced Wednesday the cancellation of their 3rd of July Fireworks Festival and 4th of July Parade in 2020.
“As a commitment to protecting the health and safety of all involved from the potential risks of Covid-19, our committee voted unanimously to cancel both of our events. We promise to work hard and be back in full force for 2021.”
The Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals canceled their 2020 events due to the coronavirus on Wednesday. The Folk Festival was scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 3. The Jazz Festival was set for August 7-9.
Governor Gina Raimondo announced Wednesday during her daily COVID-19 press conference that it is not safe for concerts, parades and festivals to occur in Rhode Island this summer.
“It’s really important that we take it easy this summer so we don’t have an outbreak.”
In the coming days, the list is expected to grow.
