Letter to the editor: Fall River teen’s lifelong habit of helping others leads her to rally community after friend’s family loses everything in fire

This is a letter that was submitted to Fall River Reporter and was not written by us.

Dear Fall River Reporter,

I’m reaching out in hopes you’ll consider sharing the story of my 16-year-old daughter, Giuliana “Juju” Madeira, whose compassion and selflessness have touched so many people during one family’s darkest moment.

The moment Juju learned that one of her close friends and their family had lost everything in a devastating house fire on 743 Hicks St, Fall River Sunday, July 26th, she didn’t wait for someone else to help. Within minutes, she created a GoFundMe fundraiser to rally our community together and support the family as they begin the long road to recovery.

What makes this story so special is that helping others has always been part of who Juju is. Whether she’s volunteering with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities at my day program, helping someone who’s having a difficult day, assisting an elderly person, or buying food and drinks for someone experiencing homelessness, she has always led with kindness and compassion.

This wasn’t something she learned overnight.

When Juju was just four years old, she watched our community come together after another local family lost everything in a house fire. She vividly remembers helping me organize and deliver donations. Although she was so young, she never forgot the impact that simple acts of kindness can have on people facing unimaginable loss. That memory stayed with her, and years later, she became the one leading the effort to help another family in need.

She originally set a fundraising goal of $5,000, but the response from our community has been so incredible that the fundraiser continues today without a specific goal. Her only mission is to continue helping this family for as long as people are willing to give.

In a time when so much of the news surrounding teenagers focuses on the negative, Juju is a reminder that there are young people quietly making a difference every single day. She didn’t seek recognition, attention, or praise. She simply saw a family hurting and decided to act.

As her mother, I couldn’t be prouder—not because she’s my daughter, but because she genuinely lives with a servant’s heart. I believe her story has the power to inspire others, especially young people, to realize that age doesn’t limit your ability to make a meaningful difference.
