Lakeville FD made an animal rescue Tuesday in cold temperatures.

According to the Lakeville Fire Department, a concerned citizen reported a goose in distress on Assawompset Pond. Firefighters were unable to locate the bird at first, but after a second report they were able to locate the bird across from Sts. Martha & Mary Church.

Firefighters assessed the situation and determined that a rescue could be made safely. Procautions were taken to protect responders from a potential exposure to Avian Influenza (HPAI).

When determining the viability of a rescue, firefighters consider human life safety, potential for bystander rescue attempts, and the potential training value from the operation.

Personal protective equipment was used to protect themselves.

The Department asks the community to not handle deceased or stick birds. State officials provide the following guidance:

The public should report observations of sick or deceased birds if 5 or more birds are found at a single location.

The public should report sick or dead poultry or other domestic birds by calling MDAR’s Division of Animal Health at (617) 626-1795.

The public should avoid handling any sick or dead birds.

Pets should always be kept away from wildlife. Cats are highly susceptible to HPAI and may die from an infection.

This bird was handed over to ACO David Frates for further care.
