A Massachusetts mother who was a pillar of the community is being remembered after her tragic death.

According to police, on Wednesday, at approximately 1:45 p.m., the Sutton Police Department received a 9-1-1 call for a female party that had fallen approximately 50-75 feet in the Purgatory Chasm.

The 49-year-old female from Topsfield, MA, and mother of four, was out hiking with three of her children, and some other family members when tragedy struck.

There were multiple medical professionals in the area hiking the Chasm at the same time, and were able to provide medical attention right away. However, she had succumbed to the injuries sustained during the fall, and was pronounced deceased a short time later.

According to the Office of Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early, Jr., the deceased has been identified as Carolyn (Carrie) Sanger.

Those who knew Sanger described her as a kind soul who recently left her career as an oncology nurse and opened Balanced Body in Topsfield and worked as a licensed massage therapist and Reiki Master.

The incident is currently under investigation but does appear to be accidental.
