Karen Read, accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston Police officer, has been found not guilty on most charges.

Read was found not guilty of second-degree murder, not guilty of leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death, not guilty of manslaughter while operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor, but found guilty of OUI.

1 year of probation is being recommended on the OUI charge.

The jury initially stated that they had a verdict then changed their mind before court reconvened. The jury then reached a verdict a second time.

On January 29, 2022, John O’Keefe was found unresponsive in the snow outside a home in Canton, Massachusetts, and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Prosecutors alleged that Read, intoxicated and angry with O’Keefe, struck him with her SUV. Read’s defense attorneys countered that she was framed, asserting she was targeted in a law enforcement conspiracy to protect the true perpetrators.

On July 1, 2024, the jury in Read’s trial notified the presiding judge of their inability to reach a unanimous verdict, leading to a mistrial. Norfolk County prosecutors subsequently announced plans to retry Read for O’Keefe’s murder.
