Employees at the state Department of Transportation continue to mourn the death of a colleague nearly three months after he was struck and killed by a motorist while on the job.

Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver opened his latest presentation to the MassDOT board Wednesday by describing the death of David Sousa as “one of the most difficult points in my career.”

Sousa, who was also a former chair of the Stoughton Select Board, was collecting debris on Route 24 around 9:30 p.m. in late July when he was fatally struck by a car. Gulliver said Wednesday it was the second in-service death of a MassDOT employee in 15 years.

“Something that we were really thankful for is we had a huge amount of support from a lot of our colleagues across New England. Every state sent at least one or two representatives to his funeral,” Gulliver said. “We also had numerous police, fire, EMS, state police, who were incredibly gracious with their time and their honor guard.”

Gulliver said a police investigation is “active” and that a report has not been completed. Officials will review the report once it’s complete for any “relevant findings, especially if there’s any sort of changes that need to be done,” he said.

The Greg Hill Foundation has raised over $36,000 for the Sousa family.
