Incident Reports from Massachusetts Migrant Shelters Expose Sexual Assaults, Gang Affiliations, Drugs and Weapons

A public records request made by the Massachusetts GOP yielded thousands of pages documenting serious incidents that occurred involving migrants currently being housed in shelters throughout the state.

In an email from Logan Trupiano, Director of Communications for the MassGOP, the party attached files of documents from 2022, 2023 and 2024, each with copies of incident reports filed by the managing party of each shelter. In the reports, multiple cases of alleged sexual assaults, physical assaults and drug use.

Trupiano states “The documents provided are extensive and dense, spanning thousands of pages. We made an effort to highlight as many instances of physical and sexual assault, as well as incidents involving weapons, drugs, and gang affiliation. However, it’s important to note that the flagged incidents do not represent a complete picture of the very serious issues occurring within these shelters—there are far more incidents than those we’ve flagged.”

The trove of documents comes days after Governor Maura Healey announced that she has ordered inspections of the state-funded shelters after the seizure of an assault rifle and a million dollars worth of Fentanyl was found at the Quality Inn in Revere, which is currently being used as a migrant shelter.

“It’s outrageous that this individual took advantage of our shelter system to engage in criminal activity. Our administration has been in touch with both local law enforcement and federal immigration officials regarding this case. This further underscores our broken federal immigration system and the urgent need for Congress and the White House to act on a border security bill to prevent criminals from entering our communities. The people of Massachusetts should not continue to have to deal with the impacts of federal inaction. I’ve ordered an inspection of all shelter units, beginning with the Revere site, and a full review of our intake processes to determine any additional steps that we can take to prevent criminal activity in shelters.”
