A Massachusetts boy has died after being found unresponsive last month at a pond.

According to Rebecca Perry, principal, Doherty Middle School and Keith Taverna, interim superintendent, Andover Public Schools, Cody Nguyen, an eighth-grade student at Doherty Middle School passed away June 19th, following a medical emergency at Field Pond

Chief Patrick Keefe previously reported that the Andover Police Department along with the Andover Fire Department responded to a call for an unresponsive juvenile male who was still submerged in Field Pond, located in Harold Parker State Forrest in close proximity to 6 Farrwood Drive.

At 4:31 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, first responders arrived at the shoreline to find several male juveniles who were on the opposite shoreline yelling to them attempting to direct them toward where Nguyen was last observed prior to going under water.

First responders entered the water utilizing a paddle board and personal floatation devices and made their way out to where Nguyen was last observed. They were able to locate him approximately 25 feet from shore, submerged in approximately 10-12 feet of water. First responders were able to pull Nguyen from the water and place him onto the paddle board and immediately begin life saving measures. He was brought back to shore where they were met by additional first responders, to include Paramedics from Lawrence General Hospital. Nguyen was later transported by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital, and shortly thereafter, transported via Boston Medflight to a Boston hospital for further treatment.

According to an obituary, the 14-year-old Nguyen “had a knack for expressing himself through fashion. Whether on or off the basketball court, he exuded confidence and energy that inspired those around him. His kindness and positivity were constants in his life, and his radiant smile had a way of uplifting everyone he encountered.

“An avid basketball player, Cody could often be found outside practicing his shots or honing his skills on the court. His passion for the game was matched only by his enthusiasm for gaming on his PC, where he enjoyed spending time immersed in virtual adventures. Athletic and creative, Cody balanced these interests with a patient and caring nature that left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.”
