As the lights shine brightest in the excitement of NCAA March Madness, one name from Fall River is capturing the attention and pride of a city that has always rallied behind its own: Joson Sonon, as the underdog Saint John’s are set to take on the #1 ranked Duke Blue Devils in the sweet 16.

A product of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Sonon has long been known locally as a relentless competitor, a student of the game, and a leader both on and off the court. Now, as he prepares to take the floor Friday on college basketball’s biggest stage, his journey serves as a powerful reminder of what dedication, discipline, and hometown pride can produce.

A Star Forged in Fall River

Those who have followed Durfee basketball over the years know that players like Sonon don’t come around often. From packed gyms on Elsbree Street to long nights of practice, he built his reputation the old-fashioned way—through hard work.

Coaches describe him as a complete player: explosive in transition, composed under pressure, and unafraid of the big moment. Teammates point to his leadership. Fans simply call him special.

But beyond the stats and highlights, Sonon represents something deeper—a connection to a city that prides itself on grit and resilience.

Carrying a City With Him

Fall River has always been a sports town. From youth leagues to high school rivalries, the community shows up. And now, as Sonon steps into the national spotlight, that same community will be watching.

In barbershops, living rooms, and local businesses across the city, there’s a shared sense of excitement. For many, this isn’t just another tournament game—it’s personal.

“He’s one of us.”

That sentiment echoes throughout the city.

The Next Chapter Begins

Friday’s game isn’t just about advancing in the bracket—it’s about opportunity. Joson Sonon now has a chance to showcase his talent in front of a national audience, against the best competition in the country.

Moments like these define careers. They create memories. And sometimes, they launch something even bigger.

No matter the outcome, one thing is certain: Sonon has already made Fall River proud.

More Than a Game

As March Madness continues and brackets are busted across the country, Fall River will be locked in—cheering, hoping, and believing.

Because when one of their own steps onto that court, it’s not just a game.

It’s a city showing up with him.

And Friday, all eyes will be on Joson Sonon.

St. John’s will take on Duke at 7:10 p.m. at Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. The Red Storm open as a 6 1/2-point underdog and the game will be carried on CBS.
