A friend has issued a touching tribute for a local fisherman lost at sea as he tries to raise funds for his family.

61-year-old Gene (Truitt) Holcomb is the 2nd victim from the New Bedford based capsized vessel Yankee Rose.

According to a GoFundMe fundraiser created by Dylan Shrader, “Truitt was a longtime fisherman out of New Bedford and someone many of us were proud to call a shipmate and a friend. If you knew him, you knew the kind of person he was—selfless, lighthearted, and always willing to lend a hand. He had a way of keeping spirits up even on the long, hard days that come with life at sea.”

“Those who worked alongside Truitt knew they could count on him. He cared about the people around him and never hesitated to help someone out when they needed it. He brought a lot of good to the wheelhouse, the deck, and to the people who had the chance to share a boat with him.”

Shrader states that all donations will go toward funeral expenses and helping his family manage day-to-day living costs in the weeks and months ahead.

“He deserves every bit of it.”

Angel Luis Nieves, who was also aboard Yankee Rose, is being remembered for love of God and family
