Freetown, MA resident, dispatcher, Michigan State Police, Chippewa County 911, combine to create Christmas miracle and save man’s life
The Freetown Police Department states that miracles often come in unexpected forms, and during this holiday season, the quick thinking and heroic actions of individuals brought one to life when a Freetown resident’s call for help saved a man over 1,200 miles away, it was nothing short of extraordinary—a true holiday miracle.
On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at just after 7:45 p.m., Freetown resident Edward Porawski was on the phone with his family friend in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, when he realized something was terribly wrong—he was experiencing a medical emergency. Alone in his home and surrounded by three to four feet of snow, his life was at serious risk.
Without hesitation, Porawski called 911, where Freetown 911 Dispatcher Dean Guimares immediately stepped into action. Despite the challenge of coordinating emergency services across state lines, Dispatcher Guimares worked quickly to relay critical information to the Michigan State Police and Chippewa County 911. Within minutes, first responders arrived at the victim’s home, forced entry into the residence, and provided life-saving care before transporting him to a nearby hospital.
Thanks to the swift actions of Porawski, the professionalism of Dispatcher Guimares, and the dedication of emergency responders in Michigan, the victim is now recovering and will celebrate the holidays with his friends and neighbors.
Police Chief Scott Rose stated, “The Freetown Police Department extends our gratitude to Mr. Edward Porawski for his quick actions, to Dispatcher Dean Guimares for his professionalism and persistence, and to all the emergency call takers and first responders who played a role in this life-saving effort.”
“This extraordinary event is a testament to the power of teamwork, compassion, and the dedication of those who serve in emergency services. Together, they gave the greatest gift of all—a second chance at life.”
