Former Massachusetts police detective killed in crash on Cape Cod
A man killed in a Cape Cod crash late last week has been identified.
According to police, shortly after 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning, Yarmouth Police received a 911 call reporting a single car crash into a tree with air bag deployment on Willow Street, in the area of Eversource.
Officers arrived and located a heavily damaged Kia Sportage on the northbound shoulder.
Initial indications are the vehicle was traveling south at a high speed on Willow Street prior to the crash. A single occupant was in the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.
A portion of Willow Street was shut down for approximately three hours while investigators processed the crash.
On Tuesday, the Yarmouth Police Department identified the victim as Edward McDonald, 68, of Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts.
According to an obituary, McDonald served his community as a Detective with the Springfield Police Department for over 35 years until his retirement and served as President of the Police Officer’s Union for several years.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated by Yarmouth Police Detectives and the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Unit.
