A fundraiser has been created, and flags have been ordered to be lowered, in honor of a Massachusetts firefighter who paid the ultimate sacrifice for his community.

The Boston Fire Department announced early Sunday that Robert T. Kilduff Jr., a 3-generation firefighter, was seriously injured in the line of duty Saturday night at a 3-alarm fire at 18 Treadway Road in Dorchester after falling from the third floor of a 3-story residence.

Despite the best efforts of firefighters on scene, Boston EMS and the hospital staff, Kilduff succumbed to his injuries.

He leaves behind two adult children, a girlfriend, and her children.

According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, “Bobby “BK” Kilduff dedicated his life to serving and protecting others with courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment. A proud firefighter, Robert was known not only for his bravery in the line of duty, but also for the kindness, strength, and generosity he shared with everyone around him. His loss is deeply felt by his family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the community he so selflessly served.”

Governor Maura Healey has ordered that the United States of America flag and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings beginning immediately today in honor and remembrance of Kilduff.

“I’m heartbroken to learn of the death of Boston Firefighter Robert Kilduff Jr. – a veteran, a father of two and a third generation firefighter,” said Governor Healey. “His heroic actions last night saved the lives of five individuals, in addition to the countless people he rescued throughout the course of his distinguished career. His death serves as a reminder of the dangers firefighters face every day when they put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe. My heart goes out to his family and his brothers and sisters in the Boston Fire Department. On this tragic day and every day, I want all of our Massachusetts firefighters and their loved ones to know that we stand with you, and we are forever grateful for your service and sacrifice.”

The flag lowering order will remain in effect until sunset on the day of interment and will be observed simultaneously with the ongoing order for former Congressman Barney Frank and tomorrow’s special order for Memorial Day.

Services for Kilduff have not yet been announced.
