Fire chief issues update on nursing home fire, commends Somerset firefighters, Swansea, Dighton, Fall River, Somerset Ridge staff, town residents
An update has been issued concerning an early morning fire in Somerset.
According to Fire Chief Jamison Barros, at just after 3:30 a.m., the Somerset Fire Department was dispatched for a fire at 455 Brayton Avenue, the Somerset Ridge Center.
Barros stated that his firefighters are well-acquainted with the building’s layout, as the majority of its residents are senior citizens or need mobility assistance.
On arrival, the members of Engine 5 and Ladder 1 immediately went to work, establishing a water supply and making entry to preserve the occupants’ safety.
Once inside, firefighters located the fire area on the second floor. They found that the facility’s sprinkler system had operated properly, and a staff member had utilized a fire extinguisher. Firefighters quickly applied additional water to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
As a result, the fire and soot damage were contained to the room of origin. Some areas were affected by mainly water damage, but this will not affect the long-term livability or structural integrity of the building.
No injuries were reported.
The cause is currently being investigated by the Somerset Fire Department in cooperation with the State Police Fire Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office.
Barros recognized the work put in by firefighters.
“Many things can go wrong in an event like this, often with tragic results. I want to highlight the professionalism and efficiency of the Somerset firefighters Local #2649, specifically B Crew, in their swift handling of the incident without any injuries or major property damage. Their performance reflected their training and their commitment to our community. I would also like to thank our mutual aid partners from Swansea, Dighton and Fall River as well as the Somerset Ridge staff for their early action, which contributed to this positive outcome. Finally, I want to thank our residents for the support they expressed at the scene and throughout the day.”
