Father killed in South Coast motorcycle crash remembered as vigil in his honor announced
A local man killed in a recent motorcycle crash is being remembered along with a vigil that has been planned.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, New Bedford police received 911 calls regarding a single motorcycle crash on Route 18 in the area of Union Street.
Upon arrival, police located 37-year-old Johan Marquez Marte of New Bedford injured in the left lane between Union Street and Elm Street. Marquez was receiving CPR from a civilian, who some say was his girlfriend, but was not confirmed by authorities. New Bedford Police took over life saving measures until EMS arrived. Marquez was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
A motorcycle identified as belonging to Marquez was located a short distance away.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the male lost control while operating the motorcycle.
According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, Johan was a proud and devoted father who was the kind of person who made everyone feel like family bringing people together with his humor, lighting up the primo table, or creating joyful memories for his children.
“Johan carried hope, love, and connection in everything he did. His generosity extended beyond our family—every Thanksgiving and Christmas, Johan would cook and bring meals to those without a home. He was truly the glue that kept so many of us close.”
A vigil is being held on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in the play area on Faneuil Street in Brighton. Attendees are asked to bring a candle, balloons, a picture, flowers, or balloons to honor Johan’s legacy.
The crash does not appear suspicious at this time and is still being investigated by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and New Bedford Police.
