Some local residents will be representing the United States against the world this week in sport.

Drake Manning Almeida (Somerset), Evan Barbosa (Swansea), Coach Tony Carreiro (Fall River) and Coach Eddie Costa (Fall River) are currently in Zilina, Slovakia representing the USA in the Under 18 Boys Junior ISBHF World Ball Hockey Championship.

Ball hockey is similar to ice hockey, except the game is played on foot, not skates, on a non-ice surface, and with a ball instead of a puck.

The team’s first game in the group stage is at 4:30 a.m. (ET) Thursday against Slovakia. Later, on Thursday, the USA will challenge Switzerland. On Friday, they face off against Czechoslovakia. On Saturday, they take on Great Britain and later Canada.

After the 5 games, the top two teams will play for gold and 3rd and 4th place play for bronze.

Good luck Drake, Evan, Tony, and Eddie!
