Fall River soaps and bath products highlighted in “Making Things” series
FALL RIVER, MA – For the final weeks in August, Fall River Heritage State Park turns its spotlight on the Commonwealth Soap and Toiletries Company which manufacturers soaps, lotions, and beautifully fragranced bath products.
In collaboration with Professor Andrea Klimt of UMass Dartmouth, Fall River Heritage State Park is delighted to host this new exhibit focused on soap and bath products, in its series of summer programming highlighting current thriving businesses that call Fall River home.
This month’s display combines Dr. Klimt’s photography of Commonwealth Soap and Toiletries and their workers with new interactive programming created at the Park, hands-on activities and more. Drawing on the inspiration of these companies, visitors are encouraged to create their own fun soap carvings and have fun with bubbles
In related programming, on August 29th author and former New Bedford Whaling Museum curator Judith Lund will explore the hidden history of Fall River’s brief involvement in the whaling industry. Come learn more about Fall River’s whaling days. In a tribute to Fall River’s whaling legacy visitors are invited to create their own scrimshaw… out of soap.
Admission and all programs at Fall River Heritage State Park are free and open to the public. An adult must accompany children. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request. The Visitor Center is located at 200 Davol Street in Fall River and is wheelchair accessible; parking is free and available in the Department of Conservation & Recreation lot at 5 Water Street, adjacent to Battleship Cove. Please call the park with any questions at (508) 675-5759 x500.
