Fall River school wins awards at Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild Competition
Atlantis Charter Public School’s Theater Program has announced that they recently performed at the annual Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild’s High School Drama Festival, where students took home several awards for their theatrical talents.
The High School Drama Festival is a competitive program that includes over 100 one-act plays produced by member high schools and organized across three levels: preliminary, semi-final, and state finals. Awards are given out at each level.
After an initial competition against select schools from across Massachusetts, Atlantis was one of two charter schools in the state to move to the semi-finals. This past weekend, Atlantis competed against five other schools at Saugus High School, each of which performed a play for a panel of judges and audience members while following a set of competition rules where students must run the show solo, with no help from adults. Students were also allowed only five minutes for setup and breakdown of sets and a time limit of 40 minutes to perform the play with no microphones.
Atlantis performed Places in Five by M.G. Davidson and Jason Pizzarello, a comedy about an actress who stumbles into the role of a lifetime…if only she can figure out what play she’s doing.
At the preliminary competition, Atlantis took home five “All Star Company” awards, four of which were given to middle school students for “Excellence in Acting” and one of which was given to a senior student for “Excellence in Costuming.” Although technically a high school competition, several middle school students were asked to join Atlantis at the competition for their stand out talents.
At the semi-finals, Atlantis took home another three awards in acting, choreography, and costumes, making a grand total of eight awards.
