Fall River residents evacuated from Academy building
Fall River residents were evacuated this afternoon after power and water was shut off to the building.
According to Captain Barden Castro, a sprinkler head in the basement of the Academy Building malfunctioned causing the basement to fill with water. By the time it was discovered, water had reached the electrical panel causing the power to be shut off. The water has also been turned off to the building.
National Grid is on scene, working to separate the electrical line which feeds the Academy Building from other buildings in the vicinity.
Fall River Fire and Police Departments began the process of evacuating residents in the 85 units including several elderly occupants. A representative from the city building inspectors office was also on hand.
The residents were being bused to a shelter on Middle Street.
Castro is unsure how long it will take for the work to be completed so residents can return to their homes.
