Fall River Public School 5th grade multilingual learners cutting their teeth in the news business

Fall River Public Schools announced this week the first edition of Greene Gators News, a brand-new student-produced news segment featuring multilingual learners at the William S. Greene Elementary School.
The project, led by 5th-grade MLL teacher, Ruben Nunez, started as a way for students to practice speaking but has also provided confidence, according to FRPS, building communication skills, and sharing important stories from their school community.
Nunez shot and edited the video himself and credits the entire MLL team at Greene for helping the students practice reading, making eye contact, and voice control. It was truly a collaborative effort.
Next year, Nunez hopes to expand Gators News to include having the students do some of the film work, editing, and production – to expose them to more hands-on experience in media creation.
The newscast featured anchor Saul Rodriguez who looked like a natural despite being just a fifth grader. Joining Rodriguez were reporters Emilia Lopez, Raphael Gomes, Kiara Farias, Ansh Chaudhary, Roseline Jean, and Jeremias Morocho.
More news programs for the class are on the horizon.
