Fall River property tied to Aerosmith and Lizzie Borden back on the market; what will happen to the historic structure?

A Fall River landmark has been put back on the market. What will happen to it remains to be seen.

According to a listing by Lamacchia Realty, the Central Congregational Church, designed by architects Hartwell & Swasey and recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, is for sale with an asking price of $1,900,000. The property was placed on the market in 2023 for $1,599,900 but appeared to be briefly taken off the market until 2 weeks ago when it was listed by Lamacchia.

Andrew Lombardi, the former head of the Abbey Grill which was located on the church property at 100 Rock Street and has since been restored to The Historic Abbey that hosts weddings, showers, rehearsal dinners, and corporate events, is the current owner.

The Central Congregational Church, and its 17,160 square feet, is widely known as a magnificent structure. The property is also steeped in Fall River history.

The International Culinary Academy was previously located there. It was also the former home church of Lizzie Borden and where she taught Sunday school.

Most of the video for Aerosmith’s hit song Cryin’ was shot there just over 31 years ago. The video garnered the band several awards including MTV Video of the Year, Viewer’s Choice, and Best Group Video.

The church was built way back in 1871 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It would be a shame if the historic and beautiful structure was not put to good use. Only time will tell what will happen to the property.
