UPDATE: Fall River Police, K9, capture man after car theft, accident, pursuit

Fall River Police captured a theft suspect after a crash and pursuit on Friday.

According to Detective John Robinson, at approximately 5:30 p.m., City officers in the area of Stevens Street were flagged down regarding a motor vehicle operating erratically in the area.

Officer Furtado observed a vehicle that had just been reported stolen from Red’s Quick Zone on Broadway.

Due to the time of day and concerns for safety, Ofc. Furtado did not pursue the vehicle.

Ofc. Furtado began searching the area where he last saw the vehicle speed off into. With the help of some witnesses, Ofc. Furtado was pointed in the direction of where the operator had crashed the vehicle in the area of Stevens Street.

A lengthy foot pursuit of the suspect began through the neighborhood and numerous residents aided police by providing the direction and areas he was last seen. At this point, Officers had potentially lost their chase of the suspect but with the help of Officer Kevin Lopes and K9 Joseph, they were able to successfully track the suspect who was located in a backyard of a residence on Stevens Street hiding under some lawn furniture.

After a brief struggle, Andrew Rak was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for precautionary medical treatment.

Rak was charged with, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Operating to Endanger, Failure to Stop for Police, Operating with a Suspended License, Leaving the Scene of a Accident, Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Areest, and Disturbing the Peace.
