Changes have begun at the Fall River Police Department.

Fall River Reporter was told Friday that FRPD had disbanded the K9 unit last week. Upon being told that information, we contacted the department and asked that if that was accurate, what the reasoning was behind it and what will take place when the department needs a K9. While public information officer Det. Sergeant Matthew Mendes did not address the K9 unit directly, he did reveal what is currently taking place at the department with Chief Furtado at the helm.

“The agency is undergoing a comprehensive restructuring and revitalization process, which will involve the disbanding of some units and the creation of new ones. To enhance our effectiveness in serving the community, we are conducting a thorough analysis of past resources and specialized assignments. This analysis includes evaluating financial constraints, optimizing manpower allocation, and implementing strategies to prevent employee burnout. These efforts aim to ensure that our agency is better equipped to meet the needs of our citizens efficiently and sustainably.”

Upon being promoted to interim chief, one of the changes Furtado touched on was more community involvement by the department which has already resulted in a successful Halloween trick or treat event at police headquarters on Pleasant Street. It appears more changes are coming.
