According to police, on Thursday, at approximately 3:00 p.m., police were dispatched to 1620 President Avenue for a report of a large group of juveniles who were fighting. An investigation began by School Resource Officers assigned to the Juvenile Division. They worked closely with school administrators as independent videos were surfacing that recorded the event. Through the investigation, 10 juveniles were identified and charged in connection with this incident.
On Friday, FRPD felt that it was appropriate to have an increased presence at release time from B.M.C. Durfee High School. They received information that there would be a potential for another disturbance after school. Officers observed a large crowd of juveniles entering and congregating within the plaza at 1620 President Avenue. The group was given several warnings to leave but failed to comply with police requests. As a result, two juveniles were taken into custody and charged with trespassing after notice.
FRPD issued a statement concerning the two incidents.
“We also would like to issue a warning that if groups continue to congregate within the plaza at 1620 President Avenue after school release and are not customers of the businesses within the plaza, we will continue to take action if necessary. Disorderly behavior will not be tolerated as it causes unnecessary interruption to the businesses and citizens. Parents are encouraged to use the proper drop off and pickup areas at school for their children and not use the plaza.”
PD also added that the Fall River Police and Westport Police have partnered to ensure tonight’s homecoming dance at White’s of Westport has the proper resources so students can safely enjoy the event.
