A local man is expected to face several charges after a recent incident in Somerset.

According to a statement issued by police, at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, “the Somerset Police Department responded to 311 Highview Avenue for a report of a breaking and entering into a residence. The victim reported that a male individual knocked on her door and asked if a specific person lived at the residence. When informed that no one by that name resided there, the suspect forced his way into the home, knocking the victim to the floor. The victim was able to flee the residence and run to a neighbor’s home for help. The neighbor immediately called 911.

“The suspect was then observed running from the home toward a red Hyundai Santa Fe parked nearby. A neighbor was able to record the vehicle’s registration plate, which proved instrumental in identifying the suspect. The victim later reported that several items had been stolen from her home.

“Upon arrival, Patrol Officer David Labreche initiated the investigation with the assistance of Detective Lieutenant Jason Matos and Detective Sergeant Nicholas Davidson. Based on the information developed that evening, Officer Labreche applied for and obtained an arrest warrant for Jesse Brule, age 35. Brule had previously been convicted in 2018 for shooting another man twice in Fall River and had been sentenced to 10–15 years in prison.

“Over the next several days, Somerset Police detectives conducted an extensive search for Brule and his vehicle. At approximately 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Detective Lieutenant Matos located Brule’s unoccupied vehicle in the Burger King parking lot in Middletown, Rhode Island. Shortly thereafter, Detective Matos observed Brule walking through the parking lot toward the vehicle and positively identified him. Brule then left the lot and parked behind Planet Fitness in Middletown, RI.

“Det. Lt. Matos coordinated with the Middletown, RI Police Department, which subsequently placed Brule under arrest as a fugitive from justice based on Somerset Police Department’s outstanding felony warrants. Detective Sergeant Nicholas Davidson and Detective Donald Cormier later interviewed Brule at the Middletown, RI Police Department. Brule was transported to the Adult Correctional Institution (ACI) in Cranston, Rhode Island, where he will be arraigned on Tuesday.

“On that date, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will request Brule’s extradition so that he can be arraigned on the following felony charges:

• Breaking and Entering in the Daytime for a Felony (Person Placed in Fear)

• Larceny from a Building

• Assault and Battery on an Elderly Person (Age 60 or Over)

“Chief William Tedford commended the collaborative efforts that led to Brule’s apprehension:

“I want to thank the neighbors in the Highview Avenue area for their quick actions — for capturing the suspect’s vehicle registration and for providing safety to the elderly victim as she sought help,” Chief Tedford said. “I also commend the outstanding work and persistence of Detective Lieutenant Jason Matos, Detective Sergeant Nicholas Davidson, Detective Donald Cormier, and Patrol Officer David Labreche for their exhaustive three-day search and successful coordination with our Rhode Island partners. Finally, we extend our gratitude to the Middletown Police Department for their assistance in safely taking this dangerous individual into custody.”
