A Fall River man is being held on bail after a weekend shooting.

According to police, on Saturday, officers responded to 100 block of Dover Street for a report of a male firing a gun from a second-floor apartment window. The witnesses reported hearing yelling outside and observed an unidentified man at a second-floor window shouting at a man in the parking lot before seeing a muzzle flash and hearing a loud pop coming from the window. The man was later seen exiting the building, continuing to yell, and then returned inside.

Officers entered the second-floor apartment and met with the residents. Inside were several individuals, including 45-year-old Matthew Vieira who generally matched the complainant’s description. All occupants denied involvement or hearing a gunshot.

A spent shell casing was located on the sidewalk directly beneath the window identified by the complainant. Vieira was detained and officers confirmed he did not possess a valid firearms license.

A search warrant was obtained and executed. Inside Vieira’s bedroom officers located a silver and black .380 caliber firearm inside a laundry bag.

Vieira was arrested and charged with Discharging a Firearm Within 500 Feet of a Dwelling, Possession of a Firearm Without an LTC/FID, Possession of Ammunition Without an LTC/FID, and Improper Storage of a Firearm.

According to court records, at Monday’s arraignment, Vieira pled not guilty and was being held on $50,000 bond/$5,000 cash bail, returnable for a December 18th pretrial hearing.

There were no injuries or property damage from the altercation.
