UPDATE: Fall River man arrested for assault of Trump supporter deemed not dangerous
A Fall River man arrested for allegedly attacking an 82-year-old veteran and President Trump supporter has been deemed not dangerous.
27-year-old Aidan Courtright faced a dangerousness hearing by teleconference at 3:00 p.m. Thursday after being charged with committing a civil rights violation with injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60 years old, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60 years old, and vandalizing property.
Courtright pleaded not guilty Wednesday at his arraignment.
After Thursday afternoon’s dangerousness hearing, Courtright was deemed not dangerous and was ordered by the judge to not possess firearms, not conduct in online political activity, and have no contact with the victim or witnesses in the case.
During the hearing, the defendant’s lawyer stated that his client had no criminal record and was known as a peaceful and generous person in the community.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office argued that the victim was unprovoked in a senseless attack.
Tuesday afternoon, the 82-year-old victim, who is an Air Force veteran, was allegedly assaulted by Courtright after holding a sign at the Airport Road rotary.
A witness who spoke with Fall River Reporter, stated that they saw the assault take place and reported it.
According to Lieutenant Jay Huard, the victim stated he was standing on the grass area of the rotary at North Main St and Airport Road holding a Trump sign. Courtright put his car in park and exited his vehicle. Courtright then walked towards the victim while screaming “Give me the f****** sign!” Courtright then forcefully ripped the sign out of the victim’s hands, ripped it in half, and threw it on the ground. Courtright then went after the victim, grabbing him by his shirt, knocking his hat off, and throwing him violently to the ground. While the victim was on the ground, Courtright continued the attack by kicking him in his ribs and legs. Courtright violently kicked the victim with his leather pointed shoes. Courtright then got back into his vehicle and drove off.
The victim was transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital by Rescue for evaluation.
The victim had visible bruising on his lower back.
Two independent witnesses observed the attack and were able to corroborate the victim’s version of events.
The victim stated that he believed that he was targeted and attacked because of his political beliefs and the “Trump” hat that he was wearing.
Courtright was contacted by police and later turned himself into authorities at the Fall River Police Station.
Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn commented after Courtright’s dangerousness hearing.
“The defendant is accused of engaging in outrageous and lawless violence against an 82-year-old man who was just holding a political sign. This type of violence against anyone, especially an 82-year-old veteran, is simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

(a) Whoever commits assault and battery upon a person sixty years or older by means of a dangerous weapon shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for not more than ten years or by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars or imprisonment in jail for not more than two and one-half years. ”

The victim is well known in our city to stand by himself daily at the location. At the moment, there is no follow up. The suspect is out on the restrictions the judge gave which we stated. His next court date is taking place at a later date.
