The Fall River Firefighters Union is pointing to three separate fires the department responded to on Monday as an example of why proper staffing matters, while continuing to press for more personnel and a new contract.
According to a social media post from the union, firefighters responded to a homeless encampment fire (1 person was burned) and two fires in multi-family residential buildings on Rodman Street and Tremont Street. Both residential fires were knocked down quickly with minimal damage thanks to the quick response and aggressive work of the crews on scene.
The union said the outcome demonstrates the difference a fourth firefighter makes on engine companies. “Proper staffing allows firefighters to operate more efficiently, perform critical tasks simultaneously, and stop fires before they grow into larger emergencies,” the statement read.
While the addition of a fourth firefighter to engine companies has improved operations, the union said staffing needs remain unmet. It continues to advocate for a fourth firefighter on all ladder companies, a fourth firefighter on the heavy rescue, and a dedicated District Chief’s Aide in both command vehicles. These positions, the union said, are essential to firefighter safety, effective emergency operations, and protecting the community.
The post also noted that members are now 16 months without a contract. “Fall River Firefighters continue to demonstrate their commitment to this city every single day,” the union wrote. “It’s time for that same commitment to be shown toward the firefighters who protect it. Proper staffing and a fair contract aren’t luxuries. They’re necessities.”
The staffing discussion follows years of debate in Fall River over meeting National Fire Protection Association recommendations of four firefighters per apparatus, which gained renewed attention after the July 2025 Gabriel House fire.
