Fall River Firefighter Union expresses concern over department’s proposed budget

Fall River firefighters are expressing budget concerns ahead of an upcoming budget hearing.

According to the Firefighter Union, on Monday, 5/19/2025, Fall River Firefighters responded to two structure fires in the North End of the city and reportedly experienced equipment issues. They issued the following statement.

“At the first incident, Engine 12 from Stanley Street was operating a reserve 1997 engine, which failed to go into pump—meaning no water could be supplied initially. Thanks to the quick and professional actions of the crew, the issue was resolved, and the fire was extinguished with minimal damage.

“Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident.

“Later that same day, firefighters responded to another structure fire in the North End, and a second reserve engine also failed. This forced a response using the same malfunctioning apparatus from the earlier fire.

“These “front-line reserve” engines—dating back to 1997—are plagued with ongoing mechanical issues, putting both firefighters and the public at serious risk.

“Despite this, the proposed city budget includes a cut to fire department funding. No matter how it’s spun, a cut is a cut.

“The City Council must reject these cuts and stand with the firefighters of Fall River. It’s time to invest in safety—for our members and the citizens we protect.

“Seconds count. 🧍‍♂️ Lives are on the line.

“We are asking for more—and the citizens of Fall River should DEMAND better from their city leaders.”

Ahead of a budget hearing on Thursday, the union posted the following:

Multiple requests for comment were emailed to Mayor Coogan’s Office. We have not yet received a response.

Tonight’s hearing is taking place at 6:00 p.m. at Government Center in the City Council Chamber.
