Fall River Fire Department releases cause of fire that sent 3 to the hospital, displaced 5
The Fall River Fire Department has released the cause of a weekend fire that sent several people to the hospital.
According to Deputy Fire Chief and City Fire Marshal Sean Flannery, on Sunday, at approximately 6:24 p.m., the Fall River Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at 1138 North Main Street. The initial caller reported visible flames and smoke within
the residence.
Car 2 arrived on scene, established Incident Command, and reported smoke showing from a third-floor window. Responding units included Engine 2, Engine 6, Engine 12, Ladder 4, Platform 1, and Rescue 1.
Rescue 1 conducted a primary search of the fire floor. Engines 2 and 12 served as the primary attack companies and initiated interior fire suppression operations, locating and extinguishing the main body of the fire.
Fire suppression efforts progressed rapidly, and the fire was contained and placed under control at approximately 6:50 p.m. Salvage operations on the upper floors confirmed minimal water damage beyond the immediate area of origin.
Two third-floor occupants were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment of smoke inhalation. One individual also sustained second-degree burns to the right hand, left leg, and foot. A total of five occupants were displaced as a result of the fire. The American Red Cross was notified to assist the displaced residents.
The Fire Investigation Unit determined the fire to be accidental in origin, caused by an unattended candle.
The Department reminds residents that unattended candles pose a significant fire risk. Candles should never be left burning without direct supervision and should be extinguished before leaving a room or going to sleep. Candles should be placed in stable, non-combustible holders and kept clear of combustible materials.
