Fall River, MA – Over a dozen students were involved in a rowing incident in Fall River waters on Saturday.

According to Captain Eric Caffrey, the Fall River Fire Department responded to a mass casualty incident at South Watuppa Pond involving the Tabor Academy rowing team.

The team had been scheduled to compete in a rowing meet, which was canceled due to high winds and rough water conditions. Despite the cancellation, the team proceeded with a practice session. During practice, multiple boats overturned, leaving several rowers in the frigid water.

FRFD personnel arrived on scene alongside the Fall River Police Department and Fall River EMS. By the time first responders arrived, all individuals were safely ashore and accounted for. A total of 18 students and one coach were evaluated on scene for cold exposure and other minor injuries. Patients were treated by Fall River EMS and transported to local hospitals. Mutual aid departments also helped in transporting patients to ensure timely medical care.

The department recognized the quick actions of residents along the pond, whose efforts were instrumental in assisting the rowers before emergency personnel arrived.

“Their swift response helped prevent more serious injuries in this dangerous situation.”

The Fall River Fire Department urges all residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution when engaging in water activities, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
